Recently I was reunited with a dear friend in New York. Nine months since my last visit. As the plane came in to land I reflected on the huge shifts precipitated during that last trip. Including the first post of this blog: Transformation - The High Line
Sat in Robbie's living room, last August, we talked whole-heartedly, without reserve. A conversation where we shared desires felt deeply, held for so long – yet not acted upon. Mine – “I want to live in the country. I’ve wanted to live in the country since I was a girl and yet I never have. Cities all my adult life.”
There was no action plan formed that day. Not in the conventional sense. No decision to move. Yet something was different. This desire, like a seed deeply buried in the earth through a long drought, sprouted and flourished. My intellect could not stamp it out. This time, it surrendered and got on board.
And now I do. Live in the country. Not in Australia. Here in the Yorkshire Dales. Hills, fields and dry stone walls visible from my kitchen window. A sense of peace deep in my bones. Desire made manifest.
I returned to New York, this time across the Atlantic. Relishing the contrast of this great city. Relating to what it has to offer in new ways. Sensing how my move to the country creates freedom and pleasure for frequent city visits.
For what now? Where to from here? This is a period of listening to my inner voice, researching, curious about the next piece. For life evolves and opens up from a new base. Not simply a new geographic place. That “base” within us that is created as a consequence of taking action to answer a call of desire.
The futurist, John Schaar, wrote:
“The future is not a place to which we are going, it is a place we are creating. The paths to the future are not found, but made, and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.”
We think we see the path ahead, we set out and follow in a direction, towards a chosen destination. Yet we need to be flexible and adapt. Paths are made by steps.
What makes a step? Choice and action? The link between these two is widely acknowledged. Yet there is an element missing. Desire. The nature of which ties to meaning and purpose. These desires find expression through our intuition and fine level of feeling.
When we tap into our intuition, listening to our inner voice, to what our heart desires, we turbo charge our choices. Our actions take flight. Aligned with meaning, not simply an expression of ambition, the expectations of others or the powerful rationale of our intellect.
As we do so, we unblock the process of evolution. Changing both the maker and the destination.
Today, take some time to reflect:
· How do I make choices in life?
· When desires bubble up, how do I respond?
· In what ways do I listen to my inner voice?
· To what extent is my intellect running the show?
As we practice this way of making steps, so we become more confident creating a new relationship between intuition and intellect. We pay attention to our desires. Intuition navigates, intellect implements!
Sometimes it takes a little while. In my particular example, decades! Sometimes desire, choice, action is one seamless flow. All part of the process of creating, evolving….transforming.
