“Take more time. Cover less ground.” – Thomas Merton 1915-1968
It’s two weeks since I arrived at Heathrow, entering the UK as a citizen for the first time in over twenty years. Making a commitment, here to make a life. A new chapter.
The excitement at the first motorway sign showing “The North”. A simple, bold direction, writ large before me.
And so here I am in The North. Sitting at the table in our rental in Ilkley taking time to connect and reflect.
Two weeks of activities has seen me settle in to this accommodation; buy a new car; explore new places; forage at farmer’s markets; attend a yoga intensive; research and register for long term accommodation….
Today has been a watershed. Like hitting a wall after a stream of activities and constant movement. There’s no fatigue, almost the opposite. Like a car engine over revving, time to change gear.
Leafing through my notebook as I gathered my thoughts to write, I came across this quote from the mystic Thomas Merton:
“Take more time. Cover less ground.”
It is a profound message for us all in 2015. We live at a time when we often pride ourselves on the opposite. Take less time. Cover more ground. Look, see how quickly we’re settling in, getting stuff done!
How often do we do this with anything new in our life? A new job, new home, new relationship, new creative project, new country…
Merton reminds us that sometimes we are served more by doing less. Go deeper. Don’t be in such a hurry to move along. Be brave enough to take more time. Take the long-range view.
It's my intention to practice changing gears!
