It’s 4.30pm, pitch dark, cold wind. Yorkshire in December. A pot of chai is brewing on the stove – distraction number one. Whilst stirring the chai, this post comes to me, distraction number two. Sit down to write post, distraction number three!
How masterful we are at finding a distraction when there’s something hard to get done. How swift at finding the words to justify ourselves. “This is a good idea, part of the process is to reflect on the process.” Oh please!
What could this hard thing be that has me in knots? Writing about myself. My mission, capabilities, professional bio…
I pause here in my writing imagining the thought bubbles coming my way. Words like “welcome to my world”, “join the club”, “now you know”, “your turn now” – some, maybe not so kind and polite!
The time has come as the weeks, well okay, months, of rumination and research shift gear. To transform is a verb, an action. And a couple of weeks ago the catalyst came to galvanise me into specific action.
Answer questions about myself as part of the brief for the creative agency we are working with. Not rocket science, yet important and necessary. Powerful and challenging. Begin with a clean sheet. Answers in the present tense.
Here’s some lessons I’m learning along the way:
· More time is rarely helpful
· Writing whilst thinking about the audience distorts my “voice”
· Keeping writing private is definitely not helpful
· Engage the support of an editor – a problem shared, halved
· Let go any coyness, hiding talents is helping no-one
Many of you know this already. Many of you know this already because I’ve said this to you! It’s now time for me to take my own medicine. Interesting that life circumstances have kept me at arms length from this intimate experience for a while. No longer.
To all those of you who’ve been there this year, I salute you. Whether a new website, a brand launch, writing resumes, interviewing, representing yourself in a performance review, speaking or writing about strengths and purpose.
Whether in the context of work or any other pursuit in life. For standing up and being seen – congratulations and all power to you! For the experience is empowering. Like moving through a pain barrier – we claim ourselves and own our particular contribution to this world.
