As a child, one of my favourite treats was a visit to the London Planetarium.
Last week at the American Museum of Natural History, I sat under another dome. The lights went down and again I was immersed in the spectacle of the cosmos. The mind bending facts and statistics washed over me. The "space" all around exploded with light and extraordinary colour.
We emerged from the presentation on to the Cosmic Pathway. This world class exhibit is a 360-foot-long spiral path that lays out the 13 billion year history of the universe.
Major developmental stages are marked out along the Pathway - the formation of the Milky Way, the Sun, the Earth, first life on earth, first oxygen in the oceans, the age of the dinosaurs.
Panels show the relative size of the universe at specific points in time and provide information about the evolution of the universe, the planet and life itself.
On the Pathway one stride is measured in millions of years. 360 feet is a lot of strides! Right at the very end, is a single human hair encased in perspex. This "blink and you'll miss it" is the human era in the life of the universe.
The ever evolving story of the universe is one of transformation on the grandest scale.
It challenges us to stretch our perspective of time and how we view personal growth. How impatient are we for results? How much attention do we put on the desired outcome in relation to the process of getting there?
Many people over-estimate what they can do in one year and massively under-estimate what they can achieve in five.
This is an important message for me right now. As I begin this new era in my life and in business, I can feel the familiar impatience to get everything set up and sorted!
Equally I know this is an iterative journey. Keep my head up, not down. See what's all around - keep my area of focus wide and my view long and expansive.
In what ways is this true in your life?
Reflect on the past five years, the past decade, what are the themes of evolution and growth you see?
To what extent do you value the process of transformation, rather than simply the outcome?
