I am in New York. A city unrecognisable from the one I last visited 25 years ago.
At the weekend I walked The High Line with my close friend, Robert Hammond. He is co-founder of this world famous "park in the sky", one of New York's star attractions.
Originally elevated rail tracks to move freight off the streets, the rails became obsolete and an ugly scar on an already run down landscape. Destined for demolition, Robbie had a vision of new possibility - green public space.
From visionary first beginnings to one of the city's most beloved urban renewal projects. On a warm Sunday evening we strolled the length surrounded by nature - of plant and human kind!
Famously claimed to be the only place where New Yorkers hold hands, it is a melting pot of people. Locals and visitors mingle, all ages, all demographics. All soaking up the vibe.
The vibe is the powerful energy of transformation.
The impact of the High Line project has extended out. The flow on effect is transforming the areas it crosses in every direction, bringing new life and vitality. As I walk along I marvel at the activity. New buildings, fabulous architecture, proud restoration of older sites - a vibrant mix of industry, homes, work spaces, galleries, shops, bars, restaurants - all of life leveraging one off the other.
Transformation always begins with something that already is. Something close, right under our nose, so familiar we don't see it.
We are impatient - tearing down, throwing out, moving on - these are our "go to" options. There are times when these choices are needed. Clearing the decks to begin afresh is often a first action in transformation.
There is another way. Another choice. One to be more conscious of. Where we begin with what is and transform, without demolition. The High Line was not demolished. The railway tracks can still be seen through the grasses and trees. The physical structure is sound and has a newfound beauty.
Look at your own life. Where is the potential for transforming something that already is?
Look at your possessions, the environment you live in, work in.
How do you spend your time - doing what, who with?
What is your occupation - your job and all the other "occupations" in your days?
What are your beliefs, your habits?.....
Make one choice and begin!
