“There are so many contradictions
In all these messages we send
(We keep asking)
How do I get out of here
Where do I fit in?
Though the world is torn and shaken
Even if your heart is breakin'
It's waiting for you to awaken
And someday you will-
Learn to be still”
Don Henley, “Learn to be Still” The Eagles - 1995
What does it mean to be still? Not sleeping, awake. Still. So far removed are we from the experience of stillness, we need to learn to be still.
True stillness has many layers. It seeps into our bones. Soothes our nervous system.
In stillness is one of the great secrets. Connection. To ourselves. To our place in the scheme of things.
Stillness opens the door for listening to our inner voice. To hearing the answers within. Waiting to be heard.
I learned about stillness from the Australian outback. Being on the ground. My energy earthed as if with a lightening rod. I can summon the feeling now. Primal. The land held me. The stillness in the ancient rocks, the immediacy of nature.
Not many make this journey. Not many are drawn to do so. We can cultivate stillness in the every day. For cultivate is what we need to do. Stillness is counter to the way we live now. It is often very uncomfortable.
When was the last time you lay down on the earth? You do not need to be in the outback! At the beach, be flat – best of all take the towel away and make contact with the sand. The park. The garden. The living room floor. Allow time for your body to let go. Learn to be still.
Mentally and emotionally. Slow down. Resist the reflex to “fix things up”. We hear or read of a situation, a problem, a request. Immediately we react. There is uncertainty in our lives. A decision to make. Sit with it. Let it be. Learn to be still.
Have periods without any input. Turn off the phone. Turn off the screens. Invite stillness.
Your heart is waiting for you to awaken. Learn to be still.
